<text><span class="style1">ach missile is housed in a reinforced aluminum canister. The missile is a certified round and requires no checkout or maintenance by the Patriot crew. The canister functions as a shipping and storage container and as the launch tube. The canister is hoisted onto the LS and connected to electrical wiring. The ECS computers than interrogate the missile and check for its proper operation before arming the missile. The missile is a single-stage, solid-fuel rocket. It has four, aerodynamic control surfaces at the tail.</span><span class="style5">Length: 17 feet, 5 inchesWeight: 2000 lbs.Range: 50 MilesSpeed: 2,600 mphCost: $1.1 million</span><span class="style1">The missile is guided by radar to a point just before interception. At this point, Track-Via-Missile (TVM) guidance mode begins. In this mode, RS sends out a special waveform that illuminates the target. The RS sends a message to the missile that tells it to begin looking for the special waveform that is being reflected off of the target. The missile then sends information on the location of the target back to the RS. This information is sent to the ECS where guidance computations are made. Steering commands are then sent back to the missile via the RS. This continues until the target is intercepted. This method of guiding the missile provides greater accuracy since guidance commands are based on what the missile sees. Since the missile is closer to the target than the RS, miss distances are reduced.</span></text>

<text>This unit consists of two 150-kilowatt turbine generators mounted on a M811, 5-ton truck. Normal fuel is diesel but the generators have a multifuel capability. Normal operation requires one generator on-line with the other operating in a standby mode. The Radar Set is connected to the EPP by three power cables. The cables are transported on racks mounted on the side of the EPP.The EPP is connected to the ECS via a power cable and a control cable. The control cable provides the ECS with EPP status. This includes which generator is on-line, low-fuel warning and EPP emergency shutdown capability.</text>

<text>The ECS consists of a lightweight, weather tight shelter mounted on a M814, 5 ton truck. The ECS is the only manned station in the battery during an engagement. The ECS can control up to eight launch stations (LS) through a VHF radio link. The Antenna Mast Group (AMG), Radar Set (RS), and Electrical Power Plant (EPP) are controlled from the ECS through data link cables.Radio data link to the LS is made possible by a telescopic antenna mounted on the side of the ECS. This antenna can be extended to a height of 42 feet. The ECS is manned by three operators. Engagement of targets can be automatic or semi-automatic. In the automatic mode, the system detects and engage targets without operator intervention, operators monitor system operation and can override the computers actions. In the semi-automatic mode, the operators select and engage targets that the system has detected.Up to 50 targets can be tracked and 5 Patriot missiles can be guided at the same time.</text>

<text><span class="style1"> About Patriot</span><span class="style2">The Patriots mission is to provide very-low-to-very-high altitude air defense for ground combat forces and high value assets as determined by the force commander. Patriot performs its mission with less tactical equipment, improved technology, greater fire power, improved Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) capability, simplified logistics and maintenance and 100 percent mobility as compared to earlier systems. For example, Patriots single radar performs the functions of nine antennas on an earlier system. The Patriot is the first automated, fully software driven air defense system. Patriots computers perform computational and control functions. This includes the regulation of engagements and monitoring of equiment status. The system can be operated in an automatic or semi-automatic mode.A maximum of 192 ready-to-fire missiles are in the Patriot battalion.Patriot is effective in electronic counter measure (ECM) environments. Special pulsing of the phased-array radar is automatically selected to counter enemy ECM. Additionally, all Patriot cabling and shelters are shielded against ECM.The Patriot system is manufactured by Raytheon.</span></text>
